Trauma-Informed Individual & Couples Therapy in Scottsdale

Depth-oriented therapy for relationships, life transitions, loss, and meaningful change

Sometimes people come to therapy because a relationship is struggling.

Other times, they find themselves at a crossroads, such as grieving a loss, navigating a life transition, questioning a long-held role or identity, or sensing that the ways they've always managed are no longer working.

Whatever brings you here, therapy offers a place to slow down, understand what is happening, and begin finding a way forward.

HOW EXPERIENCE SHAPES US

Much of what we experience in adulthood, including how we move toward or away from closeness, how we express needs, and how we experience emotional or physical intimacy, develops gradually through our relational experiences with others.

Over time, each of us learns something about what it means to be known by another person. We begin to sense what feels safe to share, what feels uncertain, and what may feel difficult to express. These understandings often take shape quietly and outside of awareness and become part of how we move through relationships later in life.

Sometimes these patterns appear in relationships, and other times they show up as anxiety, self-doubt, people-pleasing, emotional shutdown, or a persistent sense of feeling stuck, disconnected, or unsure of oneself.

These experiences are not signs that something is wrong with you. More often, they reflect ways you once learned to adapt, protect yourself, or maintain connection in earlier relationships.

Therapy offers a space to slow down and become more aware of these experiences as they unfold. With time and careful attention, it becomes possible to understand the deeper meanings shaping how you relate to yourself and others, and to discover new possibilities for living, relating, and moving forward.

  • Rather than pushing for quick solutions, therapy at Figure & Ground focuses on slowing down enough to notice what is actually happening in the present moment.

    That includes:

    • thoughts

    • emotions

    • bodily sensations

    • relational patterns and ways of relating as they unfold in real time

This creates space to understand not only what is happening but why it makes sense.

  • In our work together, we begin noticing moments such as:

    • hesitation or pulling back

    • shifts in emotion or tension

    • moments of connection or distance

    • ways of relating that once made sense but now feel exhausting

These moments often carry important information about how our ways of relating took shape.

  • Change emerges through greater awareness and contact.

As understanding develops, people often notice that familiar ways of being begin to shift.

    There may be:

    • more room to pause

    • more choice in how to respond

    • more capacity to stay present with themselves and others

This work unfolds at a pace that respects your history, your capacity, and the complexity of change.

Meaningful shifts happen when there is enough safety and steadiness to stay with what is real.

THE WORK

This approach is especially helpful for people who want to better understand themselves, their relationships, and the challenges that arise during periods of change, loss, uncertainty, and transition.

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

I work with adults who want to better understand themselves, their relationships, and the challenges that arise during periods of change, loss, and transition.

Often present-day struggles reflect earlier relational experiences, especially when familiar reactions continue showing up in relationships or within oneself.

COUPLES THERAPY

I work with couples who find themselves caught in cycles of conflict, distance, or misunderstanding that gradually erode a sense of connection.

Often the same arguments, shutdowns, or misunderstandings keep happening even when both partners care deeply about the relationship.

EMDR THERAPY

When helpful, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) may be integrated to support the processing of emotionally charged experiences.

EMDR is used within a relational and experiential approach, grounded in emotional safety, presence, and the therapeutic relationship.
